Insomnia – Know Different Types of Insomnia and its Remedies



Straightforward, Insomnia is a sleep disorder which falls in two main category i.e. primary insomnia and secondary insomnia. It is one of the common problem which disrupt the individual’s sleep and leave the sufferer feeling tried in the following morning. People suffering from this disease, feel problem while sleeping even though if he/she is tiered. Sometime, people also wake up in the middle and lie awake for hours. It will harsh your energy, health, mood and ability to function properly in the morning.

Common Insomnia symptoms are:
  • Feeling tiered upon waking
  •  Difficulty in falling asleep
  •  Waking up too early in the morning
  •  Waking up early in the night and feeling difficulty in sleeping
  •  Irritability
  •  General tiredness
  •  Problem in concentrating
  • Let’s understand different type of Insomnia:

>>Primary Insomnia: People suffering from Primary insomnia faces problem only in sleeping. It is not directly associated with other health issues.
>>Secondary Insomnia:  In this situation people faces problem due to some other health conditions like depression, cancer, asthma, medication which they are taking or because of any other issues like taking some restricted substances like alcohol etc.
Based on longevity, it is also classified in two other categories i.e. Acute and Chronic. Acute insomnia will last short and chronic will last long. It will also come and go with period of time. Acute insomnia will last for one night to few weeks.  It is called chronic when it last for a months or longer then it.

Common habits which make Insomnia worst:
  •  An irregular Sleep schedule
  •  Drinking a lot of alcohols or Caffeine
  • Smoking before bed
  •  Frequently taking naps during the day

Diagnosing Insomnia:
If you feel any of the symptoms mentioned above t5hen immediately talk to your health care provider. Diagnosis involves several steps physical exam, medical history and sleep history. Physician will also ask you to keep a sleep diary for a week or two and record your sleeping pattern and how do you feel when you start your day. Based on different test and your sleeping pattern, your doctor will also refer you to sleep center for special test.

Insomnia Treatment:
It is very essential to treat Insomnia at the very beginning because your negligence will make it highly severer and can cause several serious problems. Apart from going through any of the treatment process, it is also very important for you to look at your daily habits. Adopting new habits will make the situation under control and you will feel much better. Some of the healthy habits which you can adopt for better sleeping are:
  •  Avoid naps
  •  Try to avoid using Alcohols, Caffeine or nicotine
  •  Make sure your bedroom remain quite clear, dark, cool and quiet.
  •  Try to avoid stimulating activities
  • Stick to a regular sleep schedule
  •  Take exercise regularly  

Acute insomnia can be easily treated by making changes in your daily lifestyle however in case of chronic insomnia you have to undergo medical treatment process also. In this Treatment process physician will treat the underlying condition or health related problems. In case if it still persists then your doctor may advise for behavioral therapy for better result.
